COMIENZOS HUMILDES

Robert People nació en Baltimore, Maryland, en 1979. Fue el segundo de cuatro hermanos y creció con una madre soltera en la pobreza. La familia vivía en las típicas casas adosadas del centro de Baltimore. Se esforzaban por sacar el mejor partido a su situación, y Robert soñaba con tiempos mejores, cuando su madre ya no tuviera que coger el autobús para ir y volver del trabajo y no tuvieran que pedir dinero prestado para llegar a fin de mes.

UNA AYUDANTE NACIDA

La madre de Robert luchó por más oportunidades, asistiendo a la escuela para convertirse en asistente de enfermería mientras trabajaba a tiempo completo. Robert admiraba su perseverancia y se identificaba con su impulso por ayudar a la gente. Al principio soñaba con ser médico. Mientras sus amigos temían al médico y contaban historias de terror exageradas sobre sus revisiones, él disfrutaba de las visitas. Soportaba las inyecciones solo por la oportunidad de observar de cerca cómo ayudaban a la gente. Le encantaba la idea de salvar vidas y apreciaba la atención y el cuidado. La compasión que los médicos mostraban hacia sus pacientes.

De adolescente, Robert se enamoró de la idea de ser profesor, una pasión que aún conserva. Le encantaba la escuela y quería transmitir a los demás la misma maravillosa sensación que él experimentaba al aprender. La vida llevó a Robert por un camino diferente, pero la base...Todo seguía igual: Robert estaba destinado a una vida de servicio.

EL EJÉRCITO DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS

Poco después de comenzar su último año de instituto, Robert siguió los pasos de su hermano mayor y se alistó en el ejército. Partió al día siguiente de cumplir 18 años y se enfrentó a su primera prueba de fuego en la vida adulta: completar el entrenamiento básico.

Robert no tenía previsto originalmente hacer carrera militar. Estaba a punto de terminar su segundo período de alistamiento en Fort Cavazos, Texas, cuando él y otros soldados de menor rango asistieron a una charla impartida por el sargento mayor de la base.

La conversación comenzó así: «Al visitar sus unidades y hablar con ustedes, percibo muchas quejas, pero también muchas ideas excelentes. Sin embargo, solo unos pocos de ustedes están dispuestos a esforzarse para presentarse ante la junta de ascensos y convertirse en sargentos. Tienen una oportunidad de oro para dar ese paso y tal vez implementar esas ideas. ¿Quieren ser parte del problema o parte de la solución?».

Robert sabía su respuesta. Regresó a su unidad, solicitó presentarse ante la junta de ascensos y el resto es historia. Robert sirvió a los Estados Unidos de América durante 21 años a través de tres misiones de combate (2 en Irak, 1 en Afganistán) y en los roles de

Especialista en municiones y periodista antes de jubilarse en 2018.

AYUDA A ROBERT A SER PARTE DE LA SOLUCIÓN

Cuando Robert se unió al Ejército, juró lealtad a la Constitución, no a un partido político ni a un presidente. Su juramento aún no ha terminado. Su pasión por el servicio público lo impulsa a seguir el consejo de aquel sargento mayor de hace 25 años y a ser parte de la solución.

Robert está listo para dar un paso al frente y servir al Distrito 15. Como su representante, la gente no es solo su apellido, sino su PRIMERA PRIORIDAD.
